Faculty Details
James W. Kim - MBBCh, PgDip, MScCH(HPTE)
Dr. Kim is a general practitioner in Calgary with special interest in diabetes and migraine. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at University of Calgary. He works as a peer reviewer and editorial board member for number of medical journals. He has given numerous presentations on the topics of chronic migraine, binge eating disorder, ADHD, respiratory medicine, NAFLD, insomnia, medical education and on diabetes. He has also given number of presentations on behalf of national organizations such as Diabetes Canada and Migraine Canada at various conferences.Within Diabetes Canada, his role includes steering committee member for the Clinical Practice Guideline, current co-chair of Primary Care Special Interest Group, Dissemination and Implementation member, author of the guideline, and has been a scientific planning committee member for the annual Diabetes Canada Conference. He is heavily involved with medical educations for the health care providers including development of numerous medical education programs, and has completed Master’s program in health care professional educations, and a guest speaker at number of Canadian universities as his focus lies on the effective medical education delivery method. Most recently, he has joined SACME’s Technology-Enhanced educational committee, and Educational Committee for Migraine Canada. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis whenever possible, and loves travelling with his family.
Christine A. Palmay - MD, CCFP, FCFP
Dr. Christine Palmay graduated from the Western University Schulich School of Medicine in 2006 during which time she was granted with several awards, including a national scholarship for outstanding candidates pursuing family medicine. She completed her residency at the University of Toronto in 2008 and currently manages a busy family medical practice in midtown Toronto.
Dr. Palmay’s passion lies in providing comprehensive medical care, with a focus on preventative medicine and women’s health. She speaks and writes regularly on topics such as immunization and contraception. She was listed as NOW magazine’s Best Doctor in 2013, 2015 and 2016 and continues to be a steady presence in Toronto’s BEST OF list. Dr. Palmay was honoured by The Federation of Medical Women of Canada with their 2016 National Reproductive Health Award. She continues to be active in the media and speaking circuit for public education and awareness regarding many health issues.
Jeremy D. Gilbert - MD, FRCPC
Dr. Gilbert completed his medical degree, internal medicine training and endocrinology residency at the University of Toronto. He is an associate professor at the University of Toronto.He is the former program director for adult endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Toronto. He has authored a chapter in the 2013 and 2018 Diabetes Canada Guidelines. He has been a member of the steering committee of hte Diabetes Canada Guidelines since 2018. He is the national lead for dissemination and implementation for the Diabetes Canada Guidelines.He is on the executive and is a national editor for the Canadian Journal of Diabetes. He is the endocrinology section chair at the Royal College and Surgeons of Canada.He is a passionate teacher and his academic interest in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education in diabetes and endocrinology. He has received numerous awards for outstanding teaching including the 2021 Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism's Harvey Guyda Educator of the Year Award.
Subodh Verma - MD, PhD, FRCSC, FAHA
Dr. Subodh Verma is an internationally renowned cardiac surgeon-scientist and Professor at the University of Toronto. He is the current Canada Research Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery, having previously served as the Canada Research Chair in Atherosclerosis (2007-2017). Dr. Verma was recently awarded the 2021 Lister Prize in Surgery from the University of Toronto in recognition of his outstanding and continuing productivity of international stature. He is a past recipient of the Howard Morgan Award for Distinguished Achievements in Cardiovascular Research and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Gold Medal in Surgery. He is an appointee of the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons (AATS) and a member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, Royal Society of Canada. According to Google Scholar in April 2021, Dr. Verma has an h-index of 100 and his work has been cited over 50,000 times.

Dr. Verma had/has leadership roles on 10 contemporary global heart failure trials – several of which have let to paradigm changes in how individuals all around the world who live with diabetes and heart failure are now managed. He founded and oversees the CardioLink platform at St Michael’s Hospital that is conducting cardiometabolic and surgically oriented RCTs and translational studies.
Dr. Verma leads a dynamic pre-clinical and translational research team that leverages pre-clinical disease models and clinical trial-derived data to identify novel mediators of cardiovascular and cardiometabolic disease as well as answer timely and relevant healthcare questions. His research has yielded 2 United States patents and is supported by several national peer-reviewed grants.
Sonja Reichert - MD, MSc, CCFP, FCFP, ABOM Dip.
Dr. Sonja M. Reichert is a primary care physician, Associate Professor, American Board of Obesity Medicine Diplomate, and clinician- researcher.Dr. Reichert is the current Dr. Brian W. Gilbert Research Chair (Western University) in Primary Care Research, with a focus on diabetes, multi-morbidity, obesity, and the integration of exercise as medicine into patients’ lives, all observed through the primary care lens.Dr. Reichert has published several peer-reviewed articles and is a current contributor to the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines (Diabetes Remission, 2023). She is an award-winning teacher, and director of Western’s PGY3 Enhanced Skills Chronic Disease Management Program. Her passion for teaching extends to a variety of students including Post Graduate (Family Physician Residents), and Graduate (Masters and Doctoral) candidates.Dr. Reichert holds a BSc in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo, an MSc in Exercise Physiology from the University of Toronto and an MD from McMaster University.
Peter R. Butt - MD, CCFP(EM), FCFP
Dr. Peter Butt has been awarded certification and fellowship from the CFPC, with a Certificate of Added Competence in Addiction Medicine. He is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and has served as a consultant in addiction medicine in the Saskatchewan Health Authority for 24 years. Prior to that, he practised comprehensive rural family medicine with additional training in anesthesiology, certified in emergency medicine, practised palliative care, and was the Director of Northern Medical Services. Indigenous health care has been an important focus throughout his career.
Dr. Butt chaired the original development of Canada’s Low Risk Drinking Guidelines (2011), co-chaired the Canadian Guidelines on Alcohol Use Disorder Among Older Adults (2019), and co-chaired the 2023 Canadian Guidance on Alcohol and Health with the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction. Other research he has focused on is the human canine bond in substance use disorder, alcohol toxicity deaths, addiction care during the COVID-19 pandemic, Indigenous community tobacco reduction strategies, SBIRT process mapping, and the prevention of binge drinking among post secondary students.
As Dr. Butt feels, where else but in family medicine can you have such a diverse, fascinating, and rewarding career? Research is a collective effort, however, and requires support in terms of space, time, funding, and human resources to obtain the greatest benefit from those who wish to participate. It will only grow in importance as our discipline evolves to the Patient’s Medical Home vision, with a greater focus on community and population health needs.

Richard Leigh - MD, PhD, MSc
Richard is an accomplished physician-scientist who is highly respected for achievements in research, teaching and leadership in medicine. He has been clinical head, Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services, and academic head, Department of Medicine, CSM, since 2016.
Richard joined the Faculty of Medicine at UCalgary (now CSM) in 2004. Richard’s areas of research interest include understanding the basic mechanisms underlying airway remodeling in asthma, the assessment of airway inflammation and early phase clinical trials in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. His research studying the role of rhinovirus infections in the pathogenesis of airway remodeling in asthma is funded through a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He is also a principal investigator in the AllerGen Clinical Investigator Collaborative, a national group of leading researchers conducting clinical trials to evaluate new treatments for allergic asthma.
Richard’s clinical practice focuses on severe asthma and other airway diseases. He is a professor in the departments of Medicine and Physiology and Pharmacology. He is also a member of the Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases. Richard served as the division chief, Respiratory Medicine, prior to being appointed to head the Department of Medicine in 2016.
He earned a Master’s degree in Health Research Methodology and PhD in Medical Sciences from McMaster University. Originally from South Africa, Richard obtained his medical degree from the University of Cape Town with distinction in pre-clinical and clinical examinations.
Peter J. Lin - MD, CCFP
Dr. Peter Lin began his studies in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario. Midway through, he moved to the Faculty of Medicine, where he completed his studies and became involved in research. Over the years, it became apparent to him that there was a wide chasm between research and clinical practice, and he moved into clinical practice in primary care and eventually into teaching in order to help bridge this gap. He served as the medical director at the Health & Wellness Centre, University of Toronto Scarborough, for 7 years.Currently, Dr. Peter Lin is the Director of Primary Care Initiatives at the Canadian Heart Research Centre. He is also a contributing author to the Canadian Diabetes Guidelines 2013 and 2018 on the vascular protection section. He is also Associate Editor for the Elsevier WebPortal - PracticeUpdate Primary Care. He lectures and speaks internationally on a variety of topics. Dr. Lin has worked with KDIGO in order to help improve care for CKD patients. He has also been tracking and providing information on COVID-19 to the public since the beginning of the pandemic. Dr. Lin received a teaching award from the College of Family Physicians in 2011.
